A Democrat Congresswoman has sparked outrage after mocking Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s disability with a jaw-dropping nickname. The tasteless comment has Republicans moving swiftly to hold her accountable in what could become the second Democratic censure this year.
At a glance:
• Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) referred to Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott as “Governor Hot Wheels” during a speech
• Abbott has used a wheelchair since 1984 after an accident left him partially paralyzed
• Rep. Randy Weber (R-Texas) is introducing a censure resolution against Crockett for her “vile” comments
• Crockett claims her remarks targeted Abbott’s governance, not his disability
• If passed, Crockett would be the second House Democrat censured this year
Democrat’s “Hot Wheels” Attack Ignites Republican Outrage
Democratic Representative Jasmine Crockett of Texas is facing severe backlash after referring to Texas Governor Greg Abbott as “Governor Hot Wheels” during a Human Rights Campaign dinner in Los Angeles. The remark, clearly mocking Abbott’s use of a wheelchair, drew sharp criticism from Republicans who described it as a discriminatory attack on the Governor’s disability.
Abbott has been partially paralyzed and using a wheelchair since 1984 when a tree fell on him during a jog. The derogatory nickname used by Crockett, who served as National Co-Chair for Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign, was delivered alongside further criticism that Abbott is “a hot mess.”
Republicans Move to Censure Crockett
Texas Republican Representative Randy Weber is leading the charge to formally censure Crockett for her remarks. Weber has announced plans to introduce a censure resolution, stating: “I plan to introduce a bill to censure Jasmine Crockett for her disgraceful and vile attacks against our Governor of Texas. This kind of rhetoric has no place in Congress.”

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton was among the first high-profile Republicans to condemn Crockett’s statement, declaring: “Jasmine Crockett is despicable.” Senator John Cornyn also weighed in, saying: “Crockett’s comments are disgraceful. Can you imagine if a Republican said something like this? It would be on front page of NYT and all over CNN.”
The National Republican Congressional Committee spokesperson Mike Marinella called Crockett “the perfect spokesperson for today’s Democrats — out of touch and completely unhinged.” The censure, if passed, would serve as a formal declaration of disapproval from the House of Representatives, marking Crockett as the second Democrat to face such action this year.
Crockett Claims Comment Targeted Policies, Not Disability
Following the backlash, Crockett attempted to defend her remarks by claiming she wasn’t targeting Abbott’s disability. “I wasn’t thinking about the Governor’s condition—I was thinking about the planes, trains, and automobiles he used to transfer migrants into communities led by Black Mayors, deliberately stoking tension and fear among the most vulnerable,” Crockett said.
The Dallas Democrat, who has gained prominence for her confrontational style since taking office in 2023, suggested Republicans are using her comments as a distraction from more serious issues. This incident follows other controversial remarks by Crockett, including previous statements about Elon Musk that also drew criticism.
