Picture this: you buy a lottery ticket and you leave it in your purse or on the table for days or weeks before you finally decide to check it. It’s something all of us have probably done at some point – after all, the chances of winning are low and the possibility of winning is always exciting until you finally check and realize you’ve lost.
But for one couple in in Western Australia, the reality was just as exciting as the prospects of winning. A report last week revealed how a retired woman discovered that she had won $20,000 per month for the next twenty years after being badgered repeatedly by her husband to “check the ticket.”
The couple, who live south of Perth, won the “Set for Life” draw on August 2 but didn’t check the ticket for several days afterward. Completely unaware that they had won the life-changing sum of money, they left the ticket on the kitchen table. The ticket’s total value is a massive $4.8 million – and it’ll be paid off in monthly checks for the next two decades.
Speaking to Australian media, the woman described how her husband “kept asking” if she had checked the ticket, and that “life got in the way.”
The couple were the first winner of the Set for Life prize this year, with online 27 other ticketholders having won before.
The news comes as outlets here in the United States encourage Mega Millions ticket holders to check their numbers for the Friday, August 16 draw. American lottery ticket holders could be looking at a massive $464 million payout, according to the Mega Millions website – with the last jackpot having been won on June 4.
The winning numbers for Mega Millions ticket holders are 22 – 38 – 48 – 51 – 61. The Megaball was 5, and the Megaplier was 3x.
