Brittney Griner Faces Online Vitriol After Ejection from Match

Phoenix Mercury center Brittney Griner was quick to respond to social media comments after her ejection during a game against the Los Angeles Sparks. Griner was involved in an altercation with Sparks forward Rickea Jackson during the second quarter, leading to a double technical foul and her ejection.

While waiting in the locker room, Griner took to Instagram to address comments on a video of the altercation. One commenter referred to Griner as a “man” and questioned why she was fighting women, to which Griner responded, “cuz mf’s want to try me and they can get this action!” Another user mentioned her 2022 arrest in Russia, stating, “BRITT YOU WASN’T TUFF IN RUSSIA,” to which Griner replied, “And yo (expletive) would of been someone (expletive).”

Griner was detained in Russia in February 2022 after customs officials found vape cartridges containing cannabis oil in her luggage. She was sentenced to nine years in a Russian prison but was released in December 2022 as part of a prisoner exchange. Griner has since opened up about the harrowing experience in her 2024 memoir, including how she contemplated taking her own life during her time in detention.

When another commenter suggested she should be sent back to Russia, Griner defiantly replied, “come and get me then!”

Since her return to the WNBA in 2023, Griner has been steadily regaining her form, averaging 18.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks per game this season.

Griner continues to face criticism and negative comments, but her responses highlight her resilience and willingness to confront detractors head-on.
