Crime Strikes at the Heart of Queens

On a seemingly ordinary Friday evening, around 5:45 p.m., chaos erupted at Langumas El Cache Barbershop in Corona, Queens. Two suspects entered the establishment and indiscriminately opened fire, prompting panic and fear among clients and staff. Fortunately, swift action by other barbers, particularly Rafael Abreu, averted a tragedy. Abreu bravely engaged the gunmen, attempting to restrain them and shield potential victims from harm.

Surveillance footage captured the suspects, both in hoodies, entering the barbershop intent on their target. As one suspect in a white hoodie was held back by Abreu, another in a black hoodie discharged his weapon, escalating the danger. Despite the gunfire, no one in the barbershop, including the intended target seeking cover, sustained injuries. However, the suspects managed to flee and were still at large by Monday morning, sparking a community outcry for enhanced law enforcement presence.

A Neighborhood Under Siege

Roosevelt Avenue has long battled persistent crime, from shootings to open-air prostitution increasingly troubling residents. Statistics from the 115th Precinct indicate a notable increase in major crimes, including shootings, year-over-year, reflecting the growing unease faced by local citizens. However, initiatives like Operation Restore Roosevelt, aimed at reducing these criminal activities, appear to have minimally impacted the enduring problems.

Community leaders, such as Hiram Monserrate, have commended Abreu for his heroic efforts.

“This shooting… is a stark reminder of how dangerous Roosevelt Avenue has become. Our local barber turned hero Rafael Abreu deserves the key to the city for exceptional bravery and saving lives,” Monserrate said.

They continue to press for a more permanent police presence, with Monserrate asserting the pressing need for protection against the drug gangs and prostitution plaguing the area. His words echo the frustrations of many community members who believe that only a consistent law enforcement presence can restore peace and order.

The call for increased security measures has reached the offices of local officials, as evidenced by a seven-point plan unveiled to reduce crime and improve area conditions. Yet, skepticism persists regarding its potential efficacy, given the scale of the problem, as seen in this recent barbershop shooting. However, these measures represent a critical stepping stone toward a safer neighborhood. As the NYPD continues its investigation with no arrests made thus far, ensuring community safety remains paramount.

What does AOC have to say about this? Will she pretend NYC doesn’t have a massive crime problem? Still?
